If you have invested in a classic car you will want to protect that investment, not only because of the financial outlay but also because a classic car is often a choice made with the heart. Some cars remind us of a particular era in our lives, or have other connotations which make them difficult to replace. You do not want a classic car breaking down and you want to know that its mechanical wellbeing is in good hands.

Some points to consider when choosing a mechanic for a classic car

With a regular production car there are certain service intervals that are recommended, and beyond that it is fairly straight forward. There are numbers of accredited mechanics who can carry out the work to satisfactory levels. But a classic car can be different and there are many things to consider such as:

  • The parts may be rare or may even require special tooling. Can the mechanic get these parts or organise the tooling of parts as required?
  • If you are a member of a classic car club, what do other members say about the mechanic? Are they recommended?
  • Have they worked with your model of car before and if so can you get an affidavit from the owner of the car they worked on?
  • Are they recognised by your state motoring club?
  • Do they speak in a way that engenders confidence? Do they speak about your car confidently and knowledgeably, or do they sound uncertain?
  • Your insurer will be able to help you with making the right choice as well. Ask them who they recommend for your model.
  • Take a look in their workshop. What kinds of cars are they working on? If they are all modern models, perhaps they are just looking for extra work and may not be the best choice.
  • Ask the person you bought the car from which mechanic they used

The main thing is that you take time, do some research, and consider all the points outlined.

Taking your classic car to a mechanic

Unlike a modern production car, mechanical work on a classic car may be complex and parts may even be an issue. You need to spend time researching the best options, and it is advised that you take plenty of time before making a choice. A classic car is an investment not only financially but also in terms of the emotional attachment, and it is worth being picky.
